Zimbabwe is reaffirming its commitment to sustainable road transportation by supporting initiatives from the Association of Southern African National Road Agencies (ASANRA).

Government, through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is hosting the 46th ASANRA board and committee meetings in Harare.

Transport Minister Felix Mhona said robust road network infrastructure is essential for economic development, aligning ASANRA’s efforts with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030.

“An efficient transport infrastructure is necessary for any country to compete effectively in today’s economy,” he stated, in a speech delivered by Engineer David Jana, the Ministry’s Chief Director of Roads.

Over the years, the Second Republic has undertaken various initiatives aimed at rehabilitating and expanding the road network, which is crucial for facilitating trade and economic activities.

Major projects have included the upgrading of key highways such as the Harare-Beitbridge Highway, which is vital for trade with South Africa, and the ongoing maintenance of rural roads to enhance access to markets and services.

Minister Mhona urged Sub-Saharan Africa to leapfrog in infrastructure development to catch up with developed countries, asserting that this is achievable with proper sector reforms.

Addressing the same meeting, Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Charles Tawengwa, expressed gratitude to the attendees.

“On behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe, I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for accepting our invitation to attend these critical meetings. Your presence underscores our shared commitment to advancing regional road infrastructure development.”
