ZIM CRICKET REKINDLE DECADES-LONG PARTNERSHIP

ZIMBABWE Cricket managing director, Givemore Makoni, has hailed the Tobacco Industries Cricket Supporters Association for a US$20,000 donation.

This marks a significant step in rekindling a long-standing relationship that spans more than four decades. The donation is expected to support ZC’s ongoing development initiatives as the organisation continues to strengthen its presence on the international stage.

“We are deeply grateful to TICSA for their continued belief in Zimbabwe Cricket,” said Makoni.

“Their contribution over the years has played an important role in the development of the game and this renewed support comes at a time when we are working hard to consolidate our gains and grow the sport even further.”

The donation was presented by TICSA Chairman Dave Bain during a meeting with Makoni.

TICSA has played a historic role in Zimbabwean cricket development, most notably funding the construction of the grandstand on the western side of Harare Sports Club ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2003, when the country hosted its group-stage matches on home soil. The association has also previously contributed towards ZC’s scholarship programme, supporting the growth of emerging talent. Explaining the motivation behind the latest donation, Bain reaffirmed TICSA’s long-standing commitment to cricket development in Zimbabwe. “Tobacco Industries was created to support cricket at all levels in Zimbabwe and has been doing that for 45 years,” he said.

“During its history, there have been several periods of inactivity, resulting in a decline in interest in the sport. Under the current administration of ZC there has been a positive transformation of cricket which our association fully supports and endorses.

“Our intention going forward is to assist the governing body where we can.”

He added:“The recent hosting of World Cup qualifying events, the resumption of visits by international touring teams and the recent outstanding performance of the national team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is clear evidence that the leadership of ZC has made significant strides in putting Zimbabwe firmly back on the international stage.

“This has been underpinned by strict control of finances, development of the national side and grassroots programmes which have secured the future for some time to come.”

Under the leadership of ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani and his Board, alongside Makoni and his management team, ZC have, in recent years, made notable strides in stabilising its operations while attracting top international teams to venues such as Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club.  This progress has culminated in Zimbabwe hosting global tournaments, including the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026, as well as achieving a historic Super Eight finish at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. — Sports Reporter/ZC
