ALL is set for the Harare Mayor’s Challenge Cup Taekwondo Championships, which will be held at the City Sports Centre tomorrow.
Athletes from the region are expected to battle for top honours in the tournament.
Harare City Martial Arts Club chairperson, 4th Dan Black Belt Sensei Martin Chimombe, said preparations for the tournament went well and they were happy with the number of athletes who registered to take part.
“Our preparations for the tournament went very well and as a club we are very satisfied with the number of athletes who registered to be part of this year’s tournament.
“We are expecting fireworks tomorrow and we are eager to see who will be crowned the champions in different categories,” he said.
Today, athletes are registering for the fights, while a weigh-in will be conducted, followed by the draw for the fights.
After the registration of athletes and the draw, a referees’ seminar will be conducted.
Sensei Chimombe said the tournament would use the Olympic system to award points in different fights, hence the need to equip referees and umpires with knowledge of how to use the system.
“For this tournament we are using the Olympic system to award points in fights and umpiring, hence we are holding a referees seminar so that they are equipped with important knowledge of the latest technology on umpiring and refereeing,” he said.
Fighters will contest in three categories – cadets, which comprise athletes from six to 14 years, juniors aged 14 to 17 and seniors aged 18 years and above.
