ZIMBABWE Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has expressed concern on match fixing allegations doing rounds on social media but has decided not to comment much as the International Cricket Council is conducting its investigations on the matter. Mukuhlani said they have also obtained the accusations doing rounds on social media but cannot discussany further until they receive something from the ICC.
“As ZC we are concerned, we received the comments on social media, they are really disturbing, we are taking them seriously but we cannot comment any further,’’ said Mukuhlani.
The match fixing allegations gathered pace after ICC anti-corruption unit chairman Ronnie Flanagan which were made two days before the start of the World Twenty20 competition in India where Zimbabwe were knocked out from the first round.
Flanagan was quoted in the international media stating that they were investigating an international team for possible match fixing.
He stated that they have a reason to believe that members of a particular team have intentions to manipulate events in forthcoming matches.
Cricket followers in the country have taken to social media to accuse some national players of manipulating matches. Quoting unnamed sources, the fans alleged that some players were paid as much as $25 000 per match while officials pocketed $100 000, but no evidence has been brought forward to support the claims.
Allegations of match fixing in cricket come at a time the nation is following events unfold in football, where a number of officials and players have been accused of match fixing in South Africa.
