ZIMBABWEAN DJ and music producer, Ashley Black, is making great strides in his musical journey.

The Malaysia-based DJ has become a popular figure on the nightlife and music scene in south east Asia.

He has become popular for championing Afro dance music in Kuala Lumpur.

It has earned him the nickname “The Commander” from the fans.

In Bali, Indonesia, and in Singapore he has also won the hearts of promoters who now regularly book him for his electrifying Afro house sets.

“Specialising in Afro house has been a transformative experience.

“The journey has been incredible and I am grateful to have been accepted in Malaysia’s vibrant community.

“I came in as a tastemaker and trendsetter and I have had the privilege of championing Afro dance music, including genres like Afro tech, Amapiano and Gqom because I knew about it and was good at it from my open format background.

“Being at the forefront of this movement has been one of the highlights of my career, allowing me to introduce new sounds and connect with audiences across south east Asia.

“The energy and passion of the Afro dance scene have inspired me every step of the way, and I look forward to continuing this journey, sharing the joy of Afro house with even more people,” he told H-Metro.

He added:

“I feel incredibly grateful to have made south east Asia my second home.

“While I feel I have accomplished a significant part of my mission here, I will always remain committed to supporting the thriving music scene.

“Funny and true, I faced skepticism from some who advised me that it would be impossible to succeed in Asia, especially as a person of colour.

“However, those challenges only fueled my determination.

“Looking ahead, I’m excited to explore new ventures and share the vibrant and dedicated spirit of south east Asian music, particularly in Malaysia, especially the Kuala Lumpur musical scene industry.

“My journey isn’t just about personal growth, it’s also about showcasing the remarkable talent and creativity in this region and also from my grassroots where there is a thriving scene

“No matter where my path takes me, I will always give back to both my first and second homes.

“I am aiming for the next great opportunity, and I’m eager to see what unfolds as I continue this journey,” he added.

Ashley Black is set to release his Afro house debut song titled” Kutanga” on Saturday to mark and celebrate a successful year.
