Zim elections likely to be deferred

Sources yesterday said it was highly unlikely that the polls will be held before June, as the crafting of the new supreme law looks certain to spill into the second half of the year.

The sources also revealed that the Zimbabwean delegation to the commissioning of Sadc’s new headquarters in Botswana last November told regional leaders holding the plebiscite soon was not feasible.

Spokespersons for Zanu-PF and the two MDC formations could not be reached for comment yesterday.
“Sadc leaders were informed of the situation; that it is not feasible for elections to be held in the first half of the year,” said a source.

Last year, President Mugabe said the elections should be held before June in line with the expiry of the inclusive Government’s lifespan.

He said the country should not continue to be governed under the GPA, adding that Zimbabweans should be guaranteed constitutional and electoral certainty.

However, it has now emerged that the plebiscite might have to be pushed back to accommodate the constitution-making process and “intervening complications” tied to the implementation of the agreement.-The Sunday Mail
