MANICALAND Provincial Education Director Mr Andrew Chigumira has hailed Unesco Associated schools in Zimbabwe for capacitating core Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the country.
Officially opening a three-day workshop of Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet) which ends today (Friday) at Chipinge Primary School, Mr Chigumira said ASPNET, which is a UNESCO programme, contributes immensely to the ideals of education, sciences, culture and communication.

“As Zimbabwe’s education system, we applaud UNESCO’s progressive ideas. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education commended UNESCO efforts for bringing our teachers together to develop them on this topical issue of ESD, which is now  a world concern,’’ he said.

Mr Chigumira said the ministry’s main objective was to meet the 2014 deadline for ESD.
“The decade for ESD that came into effect in 2005 is drawing to an end. It is, therefore, high time that we as educators reflected on what we have done and achieved during a decade that was instituted by the United Nations with UNESCO as a leading agency.

“Through UNESCO-associated schools, project network (ASPnet), the education system is confident that education for sustainable development can become a reality in our society and thus preserve our country for future generations

“In addition, since the ASPnet is a large network of schools in over 180 countries worldwide, it is easier for Zimbabwean schools to network, exchange and share ideas and information pertaining to the implementation of ESD activities with schools internationally. The world is now a global village. Information is now quickly available at the touch of a button,” he said.

Speaking during the same event, Dr Ndlovu, who is the acting Secretary-General for Zimbabwe Commission for UNESCO ASPnet, said ASPnet aims to contribute to the improvement of the quality of education in general.
