ZIMBABWE and Lebanon have signed a joint communique that will see the two countries establishing diplomatic relations, as part of the Second Republic engagement and re-engagement drive.
In a statement, the Mission of the Republic of Zimbabwe to the United Nations said the historic event will see the strengthening of economic and cultural co-operation, among others, between the two countries.
Zimbabwe was represented by Ambassador Albert R. Chimbindi, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Lebanon by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr Amal Mudallali.
Mr Ali Morad, the President of the Lebanese-Zimbabwean Friendship Association said the establishment of diplomatic ties is a culmination of years of working behind the scenes to ensure trade between the two countries blossoms.
“After years of working to push for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. I succeeded after I submitted a request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to sign the agreement, and I was pushing and supporting the file from the Lebanese side as well.
“Finally, as president of the Lebanese-Zimbabwean Friendship Association, I succeeded in achieving this to serve Zimbabwe and Lebanese investors have expressed interest in taking up business opportunities in various sectors of the Zimbabwean economy.
Lebanese investors last year met Lebanese President Michel Aoun to discuss the establishment of diplomatic relations between Harare and Beirut to ensure a smooth flow of business.
Mr Ali Morad said the aim has always been to open new horizons of economic, commercial and cultural co-operation between the two countries.
