Zimbabwean duo of designer Sabina Mutsvati and model Rutendo Denise made history when they debuted at the Swahili Fashion Week held at the Sea Cliff Hotel, in Dar es Salaam, from December 5 to 7.
They closed the opening night of the event and Mutsvati’s collection “Ndiro Dzinondifungisa Amai Vangu (Plates that remind me of my mother)” which stood out for being daring and unconventional.
Mutsvati spoke of the story behind the rusted enamel plates which she said was inspired by the memory of her late mother.
“When I was young, my mother used to fuss over her good plates because we were young and occasionally careless so we had to eat out of enamel plates,” she said.
She said upon bumping into plates that had been thrown out of a shop downtown earlier this year, she thought of using her creativity to incorporate it into her clothing designs.
“One man’s trash became my treasure as I was able to share with the world through Swahili Fashion Week the memory of my late mother,” she said.
Also on the spotlight was Zimbabwe’s first plus size runway model whose debut at the Swahili Fashion Week was both significant and historic. She became the first plus size model to grace East Africa’s most auspicious fashion gathering closing for Mutsvati’s collection.
She has come to be known for her dramatic entrances on the runway.
This time, however, it was no different with “The Towering Goddess” commanding attention with her percussion and Zimbabwean flag.
“The experience was both a humbling and exciting. Everything happened so quickly but the beauty of it all is in how they captured the moment. Walking with our nation’s flag nehosho was an intentional decision to not only to show who we are and where we are from.
“She was a subtle, sent out her ‘Unapologetically Zimbabwean’ message as a reminder that the country had exceptional talent and versatile people.”
