ZIMBABWEAN filmmakers and actors can now dream of winning an Oscar at the annual Academy Awards, the most prestigious gongs in the industry in the world.
In the past, the local filmmakers and actors couldn’t enter their work for consideration for an Oscar gong because there wasn’t a local Oscar committee, approved by the Academy bosses, to approve such entries.
However, all that has changed.
The Zimbabwe Oscars Committee is now set to allow local filmmakers and actors to participate in the Oscars. In a statement Marc Mandisol, the chairman of the Zimbabwe Oscars Committee, said this was a significant development in the history of the local film industry.
“Previously, Zimbabwean filmmakers were unable to enter the Oscars for the international Feature Film category because we did not have this committee that is approved and endorsed by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Science in Hollywood.
“It is mandatory for every country to have an Oscars Committee that selects the best film to represent the nation in the esteemed International Feature Film Category.
“This opportunity will undoubtedly elevate the global recognition of Zimbabwean cinema.
The ZOC is calling upon film practitioners to submit their resumes to join the committee.”
He added:
“To qualify, a film practitioner must have a resume showcasing at least three film production credits in the roles of producer, director or cinematographer. “
The Oscars have been recognising cinematic excellence since 1927.
