FOR the second year running, Zimbabwe manged to finish second overall behind South Africa at the 2014 FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championship which was held over the weekend in Kitwe, Zambia.According to Temba Mazvimbakupa of the Zimbabwe Motorsport Federation, Team Zimbabwe performed well at this annual motorcycling event where Regan Wasmuth grabbed the top podium place in the 85cc Class.
Young Davin Cocker also did well at this event where he took second place in the 65cc class while Tristan Grainger and Regan Bond came fourth and fifth respectively in the same section.
Two other promising young Zimbabwean motocross riders Mudiwa Chigumba and Kuda Mhene (Jnr) also competed in the 65cc Class where they settled for sixth and seventh place as they helped Zimbabwe to finish second overall behind South Africa at the end of business on Sunday at Kitwe’s Mindola Motocross Park.
Apart from Zimbabwe and South Africa, four other African countries — Kenya, Uganda, Botswana and the hosts Zambia – took part in this year’s event.
FIM Africa is the Continental Union for Motorcycling in Africa. This event has grown in stature and entries have increased over the years.
The event moves to a different host country every year and Zambia had the honour to once again host it at the Mindola Park track.
More than 120 riders from six African countries, including multiple champions and heroes all over the continent tested their mental and physical limitations at this event at the weekend.
The FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championship is one of the few motorcycle events recognised as a “Team” event, where the points of the official riders are tallied to determine who the winning African Nation will be for that particular year.
The championship this year was made up of the following classes: MX 125, MX 1, MX lite, MX 65, MX 2, MX 50, WMX and VMX .
