ZIMBABWE women golf team were lying fifth after the second round at the ongoing All-Africa Challenge Trophy at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi, Kenya. Zimbabwe had scores of 163 and 158 for a 37-over-par 321 while defending champions South Africa took over the leadership from Kenya with 294 gross.
Seventeen countries are taking part in this year’s continental ladies golf championship, with 48 players in the contest.
South Africa have dominated the event since its introduction in 1992, but in 2006 Egypt interrupted their sweep.
The AACT was born as a biennial event in Harare at Chapman Golf Club in May 1992, with 12 countries taking part.
In the hunt for the individual title, South Africa’s Cara Gorlei was still holding on at the top on 145, three shots better than Kenyan Josephine Ainley on 148.
The other South African, Cara Kruger, was in third place on 152.
Zimbabwe’s Yollanda Mubaiwa, who won the Nigeria Open title, is also in contention.
Kenya is hosting the event for the first time in 20 years.
South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Egypt, Botswana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Tunisia, Gabon, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Togo and Rwanda are taking part.
Meanwhile, leading Zimbabwean professional golfer Brendon de Jonge was expected to tee off in the US Open at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina last night.
De Jonge took his place in a star-studded field in the US$8 million event.
The golfer was scheduled to tee off at 1915 hours (Zimbabwe time) alongside American Kevin Stadler and Irishman Shane Lowry in yesterday’s opening round.
The Zimbabwean ace is still looking for his breakthrough tour win on the US PGA Tour although it’s unlikely that he will tame Pinehurst Resort and do it in North Carolina.
