ZIMBABWE’S youth and junior teams at the ongoing International Handball Federation Zone Six Challenge Trophy pulled through to the semi-finals after winning their matches yesterday in Lusaka, Zambia. The regional tournament roared into life on Tuesday and they both won two of their three games to advance to the last four in their respective categories.
In the 18-and-Under youth section, Zimbabwe were drawn in Group A together with Madagascar, South Africa and Swaziland.
They dismissed Swaziland 39-9 in their last group game to book their place in today’s semi-finals where they face Zambia from Group B.
On their way to the last four, Zimbabwe beat South Africa 40-23 in their second game of the event. They had lost to Madagascar 28-31 on Tuesday.
But the 18-and-Under side did not throw in the towel and their victory over South Africa ensured they remain on track for a spot in the semi-finals.
A win today will see them through to the finals where they can challenge for the ticket to next year’s World Youth championships.
It was a good day for the Under-21 as well when they bounced back from a 23-36 defeat at the hands of Madagascar to beat Seychelles 29-28 in a tightly contested encounter in Group A.
Zimbabwe had on Wednesday beat Lesotho 57-7.
They also face Zambia in this category and coach Cephas Mushati was relieved to see his charges progressing to the knockout stages.
“The Seychelles match was tough, but our game plan worked for us. We were defending a lot and we frustrated them. The boys put up a sterling performance, they played according to instructions.
“Tomorrow’s match won’t be easy as we are playing the hosts who are more experienced as they have the same players who played in 2016,” said Mushati.
Zimbabwe’s technical director, Farai Gwisai, commended the teams, but said it’s going to be a tough task against Zambia today.
