THE Zim Hip Hop Awards being held in Bulawayo later this year will be launched in the city on Saturday. The launch party slated for Horizon Night Club will feature performances by POY, Mr Kata, Young Stan Guluva 7, Maestro IV, Terry Chizboi, Latoya Eland, Lit Gang and Ston Uptown.
Founder of the awards, Adrian Beefy Harrison, said preparations for the awards ceremony were going on well.
“We’re hosting the launch party to acquaint ourselves with the Bulawayo community. We’ll also use this opportunity to announce the award’s venue as well as date,” said Harrison.
“Also, new talent will be discovered at the party.” He said the list of nominees will be released next month on various social media platforms. After five years of holding the awards which catapulted Bulawayo’s Cal_Vin to fame, Beefy believes the country’s hip hop scene has grown steadily.
“I believe we’ve improved as there’s now a lot of quality music out there, not only from Bulawayo and Harare, even from Masvingo, Gweru, Mutare and other cities and towns. Music videos have improved vastly and some have been featured on international music channels, Channel O and MTV Base showing local artistes are on the right track.”
Entrance to the launch party has been pegged at $5 with university students expected to part with $3 on condition they bring their student ID cards. Beefy said they decided to host this year’s awards ceremony in Bulawayo after a new breed of artistes emerged from the talented City of Kings.
“The Bulawayo artistes proved they were a force to reckon with and we decided to expose and promote them by taking the event to their city.”
Last year Cal_Vin dominated the awards as he scooped the three main accolades, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Male artiste of the Year. Guluva 7 was voted the Best Newcomer.
