NANDO’s Zimbabwe continues to showcase its commitment to culinary excellence and youth empowerment, as the fast-food chain hosted its annual Grillers Challenge in Harare yesterday.
The competition forms part of a global series that highlights the central role of the griller within the Nando’s brand.
Speaking at the event, Nando’s Zimbabwe Country Manager, Mr Steve Chamboko, emphasised the significance of the challenge, noting that the griller remains the most vital team member in the restaurant.
“The grill is the heart of Nando’s. Our roots lie in cooking in front of the customer, which makes the griller a key player in delivering food quality,” he said.
The Grillers Challenge is a global competition held annually across all Nando’s markets. Winners from each country advance to the International Grillers Challenge, where they represent their market on the global stage. Nando’s operates 1 260 restaurants worldwide.
Mr Chamboko revealed that previous winners from Zimbabwe have earned international opportunities.
“One of our past winners is now based in Australia, while others have been deployed to Mauritius. I was in Mauritius last year, and I was told Zimbabwean grillers are in high demand due to their strong work ethic. In fact, there’s even a residence there known as ‘Zimbo House’ where they are accommodated,” he said.
The 2025 edition of the challenge also reflects the company’s commitment to youth development and inclusion.
“Nando’s is a youthful, vibrant brand. We focus on empowering young people and exposing them to global opportunities. Currently, we have nine young Nandokers as part of our team, representing our values of diversity and inclusion. We strive to recruit from all corners of Zimbabwe,” said Mr Chamboko.
Nando’s Zimbabwe has experienced notable growth over the past 15 years.
“In 2010, we had only 11 restaurants. Today, we have expanded to 20, including a mobile trailer stationed at Bresa. We plan to open two additional outlets this year, bringing our total to 22. Within the SADC region, we will soon be the largest market,” he said.
Mr Happy Tshuma, a contestant from Binga, hailed the competition.
“I am from Binga and I am here to represent people not only in Binga but in marginalised communities. Everything is possible,” he said.
“I want to be an example and showcase my grilling expertise and ultimately put Zimbabwe on the map”.
Ms Priscilla Matambanadzo from Harare said it’s time females dominate the competition.
“As you can see only three girls competed in this year’s competition and I am here to change that,” she said.
The Grillers Challenge not only celebrates culinary talent, but also reinforces Nando’s position as a brand that values skill, diversity, and opportunity.
