Zimbabwe finished in fifth place with South Africa clinching the top slot in both the men and women’s categories while Angola settled for second place. The hosts came third while Mozambique, who will host the All-Africa Games in September, came fourth. On the final day of the qualifiers, the South African women’s team had to qualify through a golden set after they had been held to a draw by Angola. South Africa won the golden set 15-11. On the men’s side, South Africa were in dominant form as they won all their four matches on a 2-0 scoreline.
The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association president, Frederick Ndlovu, said the games were a big achievement for the zone and that the Zimbabwean team was still on a learning curve.
“I would say we have improved because we have done better than we did in Mozambique as some matches we lost fighting through golden sets. This meant we have the potential to win the matches.
“However, our weaknesses came in our preparations as travelling by road fatigued our players. We also struggled to arrange accommodation for ourselves,” he said.
