Zim in first medal at African Schools Games

PAIDAMOYO Chamunorwa won Zimbabwe’s first medal at the African Schools Games in Algeria on Wednesday, claiming a bronze in beach rowing women’s Under-18 solo event.

Chamunorwa came third in the race and the event marked the end of the rowing competition.

Team Zimbabwe Chef de mission Newman Gomendo said they are now looking forward to equestrian competition which begins on Thursday.

“We have got our first medal now for beach rowing in the Under-18 solo event.  Paidamoyo Chamunorwa got one bronze medal in the Under-18. This marks the end of the competition here for rowing.

“So now we have got our first medal. The next event is equestrian. The competition is starting tomorrow so we will be focusing more on equestrian,” said Gomendo.

Chamunorwa said it has been an interesting experience being part of the Games.

“My race was really good. In the first race, I felt like I didn’t push myself to the max. So, I knew in my second race, I just had to absolutely send it and just go.

“This whole coastal rowing has been such a good experience. I feel like we have really been open to new things and met new people. And I really enjoyed my race.

“I really enjoy coastal rowing.”
