ZIM INTEREST IN NEDBANK CUP FINAL

THE Nedbank Cup final will have a Zimbabwean interest this year.

Sekhukhune United beat Stellenbosch via a 4-3 penalty shootout on Sunday to book their place in the final showdown against Orlando Pirates.

The final has been set for May 27 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Pirates beat rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the first semi-final at FNB on Saturday.

Admire Dzvukamanja carries the Zimbabwean interest at Pirates while Willard Katsande is the club ambassador at Sekhukhune United.

Zimbabwean coach, Kaitano Tembo, was in charge of Sekhukhune at the start of the season.

Katsande has been using his social media platforms to show his joy in the success of Sekhukhune United.

On Sunday, Stellies were the first to threaten with Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s shot going wide as early as the second minute.

The visitors responded with attempts from Kamohelo Mokotjo and Victor Letsoalo in the space of two minutes.

The first half proved to be exciting with both teams taking on each other.

Júnior Mendieta’s powerful shot from long range was quickly blocked by the Sekhukhune defence.

In-form striker Iqraam Rayners’s shot from inside the box at the half hour mark was also saved by Sekhukhune keeper Badra Ali Sangare.

Stellies kept on piling more pressure but again Ali Sangare stood between them and the much-needed goal.

Both teams had to make changes to their goalkeeping department in preparation for the shootout.

The Sekhukhune United penalties were scored by Victor Letsoalo, Edwin Gyimah, Daniel Cardoso and Pogiso Mahlangu while Sibusiso Vilakazi’s penalty was saved.

Nhlanhla Mgaga, Junior Mendieta, Fawaaz Basadien scored for Stellenbosch while Iqraam Rayners and Carlos Ortiz missed. Sports Reporter/FARPost.
