Zim, Kenya convene high-level meeting

ZIMBABWE and Kenya will tomorrow convene a high-level meeting in Harare to review implementation of agreements signed between the two countries at the Third Session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC) during President Mnangagwa’s State visit to the East African country last year.

Seven agreements were signed between Harare and Nairobi during the last session of the JPCC held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The ceremony was headlined by President Mnangagwa and former Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta.

The agreements covered political and diplomatic consultations, and tourism and wildlife conservation, as well as civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents investigations.

The two countries also signed agreements on women empowerment and community development, youth affairs, cooperatives and sports and recreation activities.

In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade spokesperson Mr Livit Mugejo said Harare and Nairobi expect to further deepen their ties.

“During the mid-term review (MTR), Zimbabwe and Kenya are expected to review progress made in the implementation of agreed decisions in areas such as research, local governance, immigration matters, trade and investment promotion, transport and health sector cooperation, among others,” he said.

The two countries, he said, enjoy longstanding fraternal relations.

Mr Mugejo said ties between Zimbabwe and Kenya are historical.

“Beyond the existing strong bonds of solidarity, relations between the two nations have grown tremendously over the past four decades,” he added.

“In September 2022, His Excellency, President E.D. Mnangagwa, was among the Heads of State who attended the inauguration of his counterpart and President of Kenya, His Excellency `Dr William Ruto.

“Leveraging on the demonstrated strong cooperation permeating various sectors, the two nations are expected to further deepen their ties during the MTR of the Third Session of the JPCC, as the two nations consolidate the gains of their relationship.”
