Zimbabwe is expected to negotiate and sign about nine bilateral air services agreements during the ongoing International Civil Aviation Organisation Air Services Negotiation Event (ICAN 2024) being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The bilateral air service agreements provides for air connectivity opportunities between Zimbabwe and other countries as well as creating a platform for cooperation and collaboration between two countries and were aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering economic cooperation.
On Tuesday, Zimbabwe signed an air services agreement with Kuwait. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Government by Permanent Secretary for Transport and Infrastructural Development Engineer Joy Makumbe, who is leading the Zimbabwe delegation.
The agreement provided for air services connectivity opportunities, interline arrangements, collaboration and cooperation amongst the two parties. Airline operations are governed by these air services agreements between states.
Last week, Zimbabwe and Türkiye signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at co-operating in the field of transport and transport infrastructure.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona and his Turkish counterpart, Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu, signed the MoU in Türkiye.
The two held a bilateral meeting last Wednesday to strengthen relations in the transport industry.
According to the MoU, the two countries would encourage businesses to work together in rail, road motor transport, aviation, and in particular, to enable air transport. Related departments of each Ministry in transport will define their scope of cooperation, either through MoUs or other legal instruments as circumstances warrant.
The minister and other senior Government officials were in Istanbul, Turkiye, for the International Road Federation World Congress 2024.
The congress was being held under the theme: “Connecting to empower mobility: Roads as enablers of a sustainable future for all”.
