Zim-Namibia relations hailed

Namibia has pledged its continued support for Zimbabwe and to strengthen relations that were forged during the two countries’ fight for independence.
This was said by Namibia’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ms Balbina Daes Pienaar, at celebrations to mark the 24th anniversary of Namibia’s independence in Harare last week.

“The people of Zimbabwe were among those who stood firm with us during our struggle against colonial regime,” she said. “This is a country and people who have continued to support us during the transition to nationhood and the reconstruction of our country into a formidable nation state.

“It is this bond and people that continue to sustain and fuel our excellent bilateral relations over the years. We thank you Zimbabwe for continuing to carry the torch of honour steadfastly.

“Namibia will never waver her stance on regional, continental and international issues. We suffered together, we triumphed together and we shall continue fighting all battles together with those who have developed cold feet and hearts.”

Ambassador Pienaar emphasised the role played by women in the fight for Africa’s independence and called on the governments of the two sister republics to continue prioritising women’s empowerment.

She also handed over 5 000 litres of mineral water for victims of the Tokwe-Mukosi floods.
Namibia provided two helicopters to assist in moving people who had been marooned by the floods.

“Namibia is pleased to be of assistance to the Zanu-PF-led Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe and its people that experienced downpours in recent months, owing to ceaseless rains that led to the flooding of Tokwe-Mukosi Dam in Masvingo province,” Ambassador Pienaar said.
