Lovemore Dube in Maseru, Lesotho
THE Zimbabwe National Association of School Heads track and field team arrived here at 5PM yesterday after a 33-hour road journey.
Team Zimbabwe will be competing in the Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association (Cosassa) Games that roar to life here tomorrow.
Enias Nhoro, the team manager, said the trip was incident-free and that they looking forward to the athletes taking to the track this morning to loosen up.
“This evening, they’ll go straight to rest. But tomorrow after breakfast, they’ll go the stadium to loosen up. It’s the right thing to do after such a long trip,” said Nhoro.
He said the high altitude in Maseru was not likely to affect the athletes, adding that the weather conditions were not very different from those in Zimbabwe at the moment.
Team Zimbabwe comprises a 103-strong team of Under-14 boys and girls and Under-17s for both sexes in an event expected to attract a number of Southern African countries. The competition begins tomorrow and runs up to Saturday and coach Pakamile Lisimati is confident that Zimbabwe’s medal haul will exceed last year’s 17.
Cynthia Khumalo, the co-head of delegation with Arthur Maphosa, said they had decided to get to Maseru a day earlier to allow the athletes to acclimatise and have a feel of the track before the start of the competition.
