THE Borrowdale Racecourse rider of the month award has been withdrawn for the 2015 horse racing season.
The award carried a prize money of $500.Mashonaland Turf Club decided to do away with the accolade after they failed to secure sponsorship.
According to an official who asked for anonymity for professional reasons, the local horse racing authority could not get a sponsor in time hence they had do drop the award.
“We are no longer running this award after the previous sponsor Water Wright Irrigation Equipment pulled out. As soon as a new sponsor is found we will gladly bring back the award to motivate our riders,” said the official.
The award was given to a jockey or an apprentice jockey after nomination by a panel of selected judges resident at the racecourse.
The scrapping of the award is likely to come as a blow to the jockeys who relied on it to judge their performance on a monthly basis.
Previous winners of the award include Quinton “Quil” Riddle and Dewi Williams both locals and a number of foreign jockeys.
However, most races will go ahead as planned according to the programme released by the local horse racing authority after sponsors were found on time. For now preparations for the Zimbabwe Derby Grade (3) race this Sunday and the Castle Tankard Grade (1) race are in full swing.
