ZIMBABWE and Nicaragua enjoy excellent bilateral relations, rooted in solidarity, particularly in the fight against unilateral coercive measures imposed on both countries, Zanu PF National Political Commissar, Cde Munyaradzi Machacha, has said.
Speaking at a symposium on Wednesday organised by the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology, in collaboration with the Embassy of Nicaragua in Zimbabwe, Cde Machacha said Nicaragua was keenly looking forward to intensive cooperation with Zimbabwe and Zanu PF, and thus reinforce the long-time relations since 1980.
“We are equally happy that Nicaragua is reciprocating our support,” he said.
In a show of solidarity with Zimbabwe, Nicaragua pledged to support Zimbabwe’s candidature for a seat on the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, whose elections were held in New York in June 2024.
“Unfortunately, our candidate was not successful,” said Cde Machacha.
Zimbabwe and Nicaragua are members of the like-minded group on unilateral cohesive measures, together with Cuba, Iran, Syria, Bolivia, and Venezuela.
“We, therefore, must encourage each other to play a role of mobilising all like-minded nations to participate in the creation of a global level playing field. Zimbabwe and Nicaragua are strong members of the forum of those fighting against neo-colonialism and participated in the forum’s meeting held in February 2024 in Moscow in the Russian Federation.”
Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology principal, Cde Ishmael Mada, presented a lecture on the history of Zimbabwe, while Nicaraguan Ambassador to Zimbabwe Nadeska Cuthbert spoke on her country’s history.
Ambassador Cuthbert said the symposium offered an opportunity to expand the shared experience between the two countries, particularly in the fight against colonialism.
“This offers an opportunity to expand the shared experience between Nicaragua and Zimbabwe, particularly our common struggle against colonisation and our paths towards independence. By reflecting on these parallels, we deepen our understanding and build resilience and determination that have shaped both countries,” she said.
