THE Zimbabwe Davis Cup team got off to a flying start when they thumped Congo 3-0 in their opening match in Cairo, Egypt, yesterday.
Zimbabwe are battling from the Pool A of the Group III African Tournament and the event is being hosted at the outdoor Smash Tennis Academy.
Top seed Benjamin Lock got the ball rolling when he beat Congo’s Armel Mokobo 6-1, 6-0 in the singles matches while Tino Chanakira blew away Pagnol Madzou 6-0, 6-0 in the other tie.
Chanakira then combined forces with Mark Fynn as they won the doubles 6-0, 6-0 and will now wait for the challenge from Nigeria tomorrow.
Madagascar are also in the same Pool A which is playing from the red clay courts.
Martin Dzuwa, the Zimbabwe Davis Cup team captain, was happy with their start but warned his troops to move a gear up against the Nigerians.
Speaking from Cairo yesterday, Dzuwa told The Herald that Nigeria were tricky opponents and could derail Zimbabwe’s hopes of a promotion.
“It’s a good start by the team but we should not relax at all. Tomorrow (today) we are getting a bye and then meet Nigeria in the next game.
“It will be a tricky game because Nigeria are a tough side and we have to be at our best to get a good result,” said Dzuwa.
The seasoned Dzuwa hinted that they have to aim at winning all the singles matches.
The other pool has Algeria, Botswana, Benin, Mozambique and Namibia.
