Zim off to flying start

HOSTS Zimbabwe got the ICC Africa World T20 qualification campaign off to an impressive start as they easily dispatched Tanzania and Uganda at Alex Sports Club yesterday.
Zimbabwe eased to a nine wicket victory over Tanzania in their opening match before capping off the day with six wicket victory over Uganda.

Today the tournament hosts will play Kenya, who also won their opening two matches, as well as Tanzania as they continue with their bid to reach ICC World T20 Qualifiers set for the West Indies.

Zimbabwe head coach Trevor Phiri believes the team is on course to book a ticket to the world qualifiers following their morale boosting start.

“It is a good start, we are looking forward to carrying the momentum tomorrow (today). We want to win all our games and progress to the next qualifiers.

“I am happy with the batting we chased well especially in the second game, which is a positive sign,” he said.
Phiri also lauded his team for staying in shape in both matches.

“The girls are fit, we prepared well. We knew we would be having two games a day and I am glad we played well,” he said.
Skipper Chipo Mugeri praised her team for getting off to winning start and declared they are ready for the tough battle against Kenya.

“We are excited about this, it’s our first time to play at home and the girls did well, our bowling was too good for our opponents. We are so happy and we are taking each game as it comes, we are ready for Kenya,” she said.

Kenya will face Zimbabwe a confident lot after they beat Uganda by 13 runs in the first match before ending the day with a 58-run victory over Tanzania.
