Zim out of Covid danger

THE Government has declared that Covid-19 is no longer a national health threat and should now be treated like any other disease.

This follows the announcement by the World Health Organisation that the disease is no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has phased out the issuing of daily Situation Reports for Covid-19, and the last one was issued three weeks ago.

The Covid-19 Response National Coordinator, Dr Agnes Mahomva, said that the disease is being monitored like any other disease, and they are on the lookout for a number of cases that can be viewed as an outbreak.

However, caution was urged as it is too early to conclude that Zimbabwe had reached the elimination stage.

“When we have an outbreak, whether measles, cholera or a pandemic like Covid-19, we tend to give statistics daily as we monitor what is obtaining,” she said.

“Gradually when we see we are out of it, we then don’t give those daily, it is like almost saying we can’t give daily stats on malaria and pneumonia.

“We now cannot give the statistics anymore because we are out of the emergency period. Covid-19 is now being treated like any other disease.”
