A Zimbabwe secondary schoolboys’ basketball team has embarked on a dream tour of Germany where a number of players have attracted huge interest from scouts.
The local boys selected from different schools around the country are playing under Platinum Sports in partnership with the GeBe-Foundation, which facilitates international education and sports development programmes for young talent in Germany.
Every year the foundation, through Platinum Sports, invites two soccer teams and two basketball teams from Zimbabwe to tour Germany.
Excelling players stand a chance of bagging scholarships to study abroad.
Invitations were sent to parents at different schools in Zimbabwe, with those interested registering with the organisation.
The tournament started on September 2 and is set to end on September 12. The Zimbabwe boys will take part in the Luebeck Mayor’s Cup scheduled for this weekend.
They have so far played two games and beat Turner Shaft 114-56 and Luebeck Basketball Academy 49-19.
Team Zimbabwe coach Crayton Moyo said he had been impressed with the way they had performed.
“We have had a brilliant tour so far. The boys have been in top form in the two games that we have played and we hope they maintain the momentum in our coming games,” said Moyo.
He also confirmed that some had caught the eye of German scouts.
“We have players that have impressed the scouts. As we speak, Bukhosi Moyo (Petra High), Ryan Mhlanga (Petra High), Irvine Manzini (Churchill) and Jariremombe Alvin (Prince Edward) are already in talks for potential moves. We hope nothing, but the best for the boys as they fly the country’s flag,” he said.
