ZIM POET GAINS PROMINENCE IN SA

A 28-year-old poet from Nkayi has become one of South Africa’s most promising voices in the arts industry.

Mkhululi Nyathi, known for his provoking and unique perspectives on social issues, has earned recognition for his poetic talent and unwavering voice in the community.

In an interview with H-Metro Nyathi said:

“I am thrilled that I have reached this far with my talent, my first step into the world of poetry came in 2023, when I wrote my first single titled ‘Ngob’uyashada.’

“The poem resonated deeply with his audience, sparking the release of ‘UMNYAMA OZOVELA’ (The darkness that will appear), which featured 10 powerful poems.

“The album’s success was driven by the strong support from my growing fan base, many of whom encouraged me to continue writing,” he said.

He said he was always vocal about the issues happening around him, whether they were social inequalities or the struggle of his community.

“I used to post these on my Facebook stories and WhatsApp status and a number of people encouraged me to share more of my thoughts,” he said.

His talent did not go unnoticed.

Nobuhle Makhwelintaba, one of the managers of Amaqhawe Anentaba FM , played a pivotal role in introducing Nyathi to the wider artistic community.

“She guided me to studios and connected me with other artists, helping me navigate the entertainment industry, she also helped me perform at various community events, solidifying my reputation as a poet.”

However, it was his poem for the Nobuhle Virgie Foundation which catapulted Nyathi into fame.

In his tribute to Virgie’s work with the homeless, Nyathi praised her dedication and commitment to social issues.

“When Virgie shared the poem on her social media platforms, encouraging her followers to support, my work gained widespread attention, this moment marked a turning point in my career, with my poetry touching hearts and minds across South Africa.

“I wrote the poem for Virgie because I was inspired by her commitment to helping others.

“When she shared it, I never expected the overwhelming response it received, that is when I knew I had something people could relate to.

“My work is more than just a form of artistic expression, it is a vehicle for change and awareness.”

Nyathi’s manager Gugulethu Nkomo said:

“I am excited with Nyathi’s growth because his work continues to gain traction, earning him multiple bookings for live performances, including at significant events such as the South African Police Service (SAPS) anti-crime community event.

“His poems often focused on the good and bad in the community and resonated with audiences at weddings, rallies, and funerals.

“His ability to capture the complexities of human experience has made him a sought-after performer in various settings,” she said.
