ZIMBABWE Women’s Under-19 national cricket coach, Trevor Garwe, has set his sights on qualifying for the ICC T20 World Cup to be hosted by Malaysia early next year.
Garwe’s team are set to take part in Africa Qualifiers to be hosted by Rwanda.
The qualifier will be held from September 22-29.
Eight teams will battle it out for the sole ticket to the ICC Under-19 T20 World Cup.
The teams set to battle for the solitary ticket in the continental qualifiers are Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya and hosts Rwanda. Garwe believes his charges are ready for the challenge as they eye qualification for the global showcase.
“We are looking forward to qualifying for the World Cup, which is the main thing we are travelling to Rwanda to do,” said Garwe.
Having seen the Young Lady Chevrons participating in the domestic T20 Cup, before nine players were named in the squad, which participated in a tri-nation series, Garwe is confident the team will book a World Cup spot.
“As a coach, I am happy with the way our ladies have been performing and how the preparations have gone.
“I am confident that we are going there to qualify and I am confident enough that the players we have are going to do the job for us.
“They have experience and exposure of playing at the international level.”
Zimbabwe are placed in Group B alongside Malawi, Tanzania and Nigeria.
“The national team travelled to Namibia for a tri-series against UAE and Namibia with nine players from the squad which was actually a very good thing as it exposed players to international level which I believe will help us in the African qualifiers,” said Garwe.
