Zim records 11 000 diarrhoeal cases in one week

Harare – A total of eight people died and over 11 000 diarrhoeal cases were reported across the country last week, the Ministry of Health and Child Care  has said.

Diarrhoea infection is spread through contaminated food or drink as a result of poor hygiene.

An estimated 281 people died from diarrhoea last year across the country while over 460 00 cases were reported.

According to the latest Ministry of Health and Child Welfare weekly epidemiology and disease control report, 11 239 cases were reported during week 45 of 2013.

“Total diarrhoea cases reported this week are 11 239 cases and eight deaths.

“Of the reported case, 5 789 cases and five deaths were from the under five years age group,” the report said.

Mashonaland East province reported the highest number of diarrhoeal cases with 1 983 followed by Mashonaland West with 1 874 cases reported.

Meanwhile, no new typhoid or cholera cases were reported this week.

According to the report, the last cholera case was reported during week 18 of 2013.
