Zim registers health milestones

THE country has recorded notable healthcare successes, marked by a 76 percent drop in malaria cases and the attainment of the ambitious 95:95:95 UNAIDS targets ahead of the 2025 timeline.

Speaking at the national health financing dialogue for Zimbabwe held in Harare last week, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said despite the existing challenges, the country had made significant strides in improving the health system.

The conference was held under the theme: ‘More health for the money: More money for health.

”The country has made significant progress in attaining certain health targets,” Dr Mombeshora said.

“Recently, Zimbabwe celebrated attaining the 95:95:95 UNAIDS set targets even before the timeline of 2025.”

This means that at least 95 percent of those infected with HIV know their status, that 95 percent of those infected are on anti-retroviral treatment, and that 95 percent of those being treated have the virus totally suppressed.

“Early this month, Zimbabwe held commemorations of the World Malaria Day together with the other SADC Health Ministers at a time when we have noted a significant reduction in malaria incidences.

“According to Malaria Programme reports in 2024, the country has noted a 76 percent decline in malaria cases and a 69 percent decline in malaria deaths,” Dr Mombeshora said. — Herald Correspondent
