Zimbabwe’s ties with Russia are flourishing, driven by mutual investments and shared goals, acting Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu said yesterday.
Speaking at Russia Day celebrations in Harare, Minister Ndlovu reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to deepening relations.
Recent visits to Moscow by President Mnangagwa reinforced this partnership, focusing on cooperation in mining, agriculture, energy, education and defence.
Under President Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe prioritises strategic partnerships as part of its foreign relations doctrine, aimed at fostering a sustainable and democratic society.
“This doctrine affirms our unwavering commitment to building a sustainable, just, free and democratic society, one in which all citizens can lead prosperous and fulfilling lives,” Minister Ndlovu said.
He reiterated the significance of Russia Day, marking the resilience and pride of the Russian people.
“Since 1992, Zimbabwe has joined Russia in commemorating this day as a defining moment in its national journey,” Minister Ndlovu said.
Both nations have faced illegal sanctions from Western countries.
“There can be no doubt that such measures are unjust, unwarranted and designed to subvert our sovereign right to chart our own path. We are deeply grateful for Russia’s principled and consistent support, including its historic veto in the United Nations Security Council in 2008,” said Minister Ndlovu.
Russian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Nikolai Krasilnikov highlighted ongoing projects, including collaboration between the Russian company Alrosa and the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company in the diamond industry.
He condemned Israel’s aggression against Iran, which saw unprecedented attacks yesterday on the country’s important sites and the killing of military leaders.
“It is a very dangerous development,” he said.
Ambassador Krasilnikov also expressed condolences for a tragic plane crash in India on Thursday that killed 241 people on board and over 50 who were on the ground.
Russia Day not only celebrates Russian nationhood but also symbolises the robust partnerships that have developed globally.
Zimbabwe stands proudly among these allies, committed to defending the principles of the United Nations and promoting justice and peace.
