Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga yesterday visited Lusaka to express condolences on behalf of President Mnangagwa following the death of former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

In his remarks, VP Chiwenga said Zimbabwe and Zambia were “inseparable twins”, highlighting the enduring support that exists between the two nations, especially in times of need.

Former President Lungu, who died on June 5, at the age of 68, was remembered fondly for his contributions to Zambia and the broader Southern African region.

Said VP Chiwenga: “I bring you greetings from your brother during this difficult time that your nation is facing. The dark cloud hanging over the republic is what your brother, His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has sent me to convey to you, Your Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, the Government, and the people of Zambia, regarding this loss of your former President Edgar Lungu.

“We are brothers and sisters, separated only by the Zambezi River, a matter of history that we did not choose, but we remain one people. Zimbabwe is where it is today because of the role that Zambia played, welcoming and supporting us during the liberation struggle. You were a crucial Frontline State.”

VP Chiwenga’s remarks resonated with the sentiments expressed by President Hakainde Hichilema, who reaffirmed the connection between the two countries.

President Hichilema noted that “what affects Zambia also affects Zimbabwe”, emphasising the interdependent relationship that has developed over the years.

He stressed the importance of fostering awareness among younger generations about this unity, ensuring that the historical bond remains strong. “We are profoundly moved by this solemn gesture from President Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe during this dark chapter in our nation’s history,” said President Hichilema.
