Zim set for volleyball Olympic qualifiers

Sports Reporter
THE Zimbabwe men’s national volleyball team is set to compete in the second round of the Olympic qualifiers against Angola and Namibia next month in Cairo, Egypt.

The same countries met in the first round of the Zone 6 qualifiers and Zimbabwe beat Namibia before losing to Angola. The other pool consists of South Africa, Mozambique and the DRC.

Zimbabwe’s four-member team has been preparing for the qualifiers since the end of the African Games last month where they emerged ninth out of 20 countries.

Zimbabwe Volleyball Association administrator Sibangani Mashasha said preparations were on course and they were hoping to do well.

“We’ve been training to improve the team and start the preparations early so that they practice freely and not under pressure. This has helped us implement new tactics and a game plan that we think equips us well for our different opponents,” said Mashasha.

“This time we’re going to see to it that we win this round. We won’t allow our previous defeat, especially against Angola, to affect us,” said Mashasha.

The Zimbabwe team is made up of Douglas Choto, Kudzai Sibangani and Keith Machakaire. Vengai Nyaude is the coach.
