Zim still in it- Tongoona

Gwinyai Tongoona still believes Zimbabwe can clinch the Davis Cup tie against Poland after his team’s fight back in Sopot, Poland yesterday.

This Europe/Africa Group II tie goes into today’s final play level 1-1 after both countries’ number one players recorded wins yesterday. Zimbabwe’s Ben Lock won the second rubber 7-5 7-5 against Poland’s number two player Michal Prysiezny in 1 hour 51 minutes.

This was after Takanyi Garanganga had lost the opening rubber 2-6 2-6 to the home team’s number one player Kamil Majchrzak in 1 hour 9 minutes.

“It was a very good performance from both boys and we are still in with a chance,” said Tongoona from Poland last night. “Takanyi went down to a Polish player that played really well,” continued Tongoona.

“Takanyi did okay, he just lost some important points.” Tongoona hailed Lock who won 79 points against Prysiezny’s 69 in a close rubber in which the Zimbabwean had a 67% on first serve and his opponent recorded 57% also on the first serve.

“He stepped up when he needed to,” said Tongoona of Lock who won 4/6 of his break points. “It was very good performance,” said Tongoona. Today’s action starts at midday with a doubles match where Lock will partner Garanganga against Poland’s world number one doubles player Lukasz Kubot playing with Marcin Matkowski.

The reverse singles fixtures will follow the doubles match to end the tie.
