ZIMBABWE found the going tough at the 2018 World Golf Championship that ended in Ireland on Sunday, finishing a distant 43 out of 72 countries.

The three-member team of David Amm, Stuart Krog and Jack Allard had teed off on a promising note that saw them end the second day of the five-day tournament on position 11, but failed to maintain or improve on their strong start as the tournament wore on.

They eventually made a score of 289 to finish 43rd in the tournament that was won by Denmark, who scored 249, with the United States of America coming second.

South Africa were the highest ranked African nation at the tournament, coming 30th with a score of 262.

Zimbabwe Golf Association president Mufaro Chivonivoni, who headed the local delegation, bemoaned lack of funding, which he said hindered the team’s preparations for such a prestigious and important tournament.

“We hope that the new Minister of Sports will lobby the government to fund teams undertaking such important assignments,” said Chivonivoni.

Swimmimg icon Kirsty Coventry was yesterday sworn in as Zimbabwe’s new Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, taking over from Kazembe Kazembe, who moved to the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology portfolio.

The next championships will be held in Hong Kong in 2020.
