ZIMBABWE has promised to keep supporting Palestine throughout the liberation struggle against Israel to the day it attains liberation.
Addressing members of the Muslim community and religious group representatives who attended the International Quads Day Commemoration at the College of Music Centre in Harare, Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade chairperson Cde Webster Shamu said Zimbabwe fully understood what it meant to be colonised.
“Zimbabweans fully understand what it means to be oppressed. We were indeed under the colonial rule of the British; we were made to live as slaves in our own country. We took up arms and we liberated ourselves.
“Palestinians have lived for a long time under oppression, and as Zimbabwe, we shall forever stand with them till they get their independence. This is because Palestine is indeed their country and not Israelis,” he said.
Cde Shamu called on all religions to unite and preach against the oppression of fellow human beings.
“I also call on other religious groups to show support to Palestine because this does not only apply to Muslims. All religions should join hands and shun oppression for the better good.”
Palestinian Ambassador Tamer Almassiri applauded Zimbabweans for showing support for the Palestinian struggle .
“As we celebrate International Quads Day today there are dozens of countries and hundreds of cities around the world celebrating the same occasion and we raise our voices together with them to say that the Muslim community in Zimbabwe is supporting the oppressed People of Palestine. Zimbabwe is a sister country and I would like to commend the Government for their unwavering support.”
Tehillar Christian Network founder and leader Reverend Sam Malunga said it was time for Palestine to be free from Israeli occupation.
“We are here to support our Palestinian brothers in their struggle and all sorts of impediments that are going on. Christian groups in Zimbabwe are against the oppression of fellow human beings. We shall continue to show our support to our fellow Palestinians,” he said
International Quds Day is a global event where mass anti-Israel protests take place around the world.
The founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, initiated the day of solidarity with Palestine on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Quds is the Arabic translation of Jerusalem. Palestine comprises the West Bank of the River Jordan with the old city of Jerusalem or Quds, and these territories have been under Israeli occupation since 1967, with Israeli settlers continually moving in and taking more land in what amounts to de facto annexation. Another, much smaller Palestinian territory, the Gaza Strip along the Mediterranean Coast is no longer occupied, but is blockaded by Israel with access tightly controlled and development effectively banned.
