Bryant was spotted by former South Africa Sevens player, Marius Schoeman, who showed considerable interest in the player and made a number of follow-ups until he joined the side on January 14.
Yesterday Bryant told The Herald that since joining the academy, he has seen all the reasons why he should play for the Blitzbokke saying that is where his heart lies for his rugby career.
“My main goal is to make the Blitzbokke team (The Springbok 7’s).
“However, as I have just started here I am striving to play the best I can in the upcoming tournaments I have for the SA sevens academy.
“I appreciate all that Zimbabwe rugby has done for me, but unfortunately I’d have to turn it down.
“My main goal from here on is to make the Blitzbokke side, however long that may take,” said Bryant.
Bryant is also part of the Zimbabwe Under-20 Junior World Rugby Trophy squad expected to get into camp soon and travel to the United States for the annual tournament set for June.
“For now, I am not sure as to what may happen for me in June, but I do want to play for them (Zimbabwe) if the opportunity allows it to happen.
“Being in this initial set up is an honour, and I feel from being in such an amazing set up, the opportunities are endless.
“This can really jump-start my rugby career and get me closer to reaching my dream.”
Bryant is the only Zimbabwean, who caught the eye of Schoeman at the junior tournaments last year, and the former Zimbabwe Under-18 player says it took a lot for him to be included in the SA Sevens academy.
“After both the Craven Week and the SA provincial Sevens last year, Marius Schoeman actually gave me a phone call, asking if I was interested in a contract to play for his team.
“Obviously I said yes, and fortunately for me, not only am I being paid to play the sport I love, but also we are accommodated at a state-of-the-art facility, which has an amazing gym, restaurant, indoor field and hotel-like rooms.
This man (Schoeman) fought for me, even though I wasn’t in an SA provincial side he picked me.
“The fact that he picked me and believed in me out of thousands of others was my biggest inspiration to play and give it all I have.
“He is also a genuine, caring coach and always makes sure the players are settled in and have what they need, he is truly both a great man and coach.
“I hope I make him proud,” said Bryant.
And Bryant is loving life in South Africa.
“I am indeed loving it here, Stellenbosch is a great town.
“The training is consistent and tough but like Muhammad Ali said, suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion, I have also learnt so much more about Sevens and my role in the game.”
With a month in the academy, Bryant is yet to play a tournament and is hopeful he will play at the Spar International Sevens where the SA Academy has also been invited to play at Harare Sports Club in the first weekend of March.
“The first tournament, which I hope to be fit to play, is actually in Zimbabwe on the third and fourth of March.
“I am still getting used to the playing style of the SA sevens but I have seen as each day goes by I am becoming more comfortable with it.
“It takes time to get used to (that) but I am catching up day by day.
“I would say it is more tactical than any other set-up I have had in Zimbabwe.”
