The Zimbabwe women cricket team, who are enjoying their dominance in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Africa qualifiers, are looking to finish the tournament with a flourish when they take on Kenya and Tanzania today.
The Zimbabweans have been a class above their regional rivals Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in the four-team tournament that began on Saturday at Alex Sports Club and the Country Club.
The teams yesterday had a rest day after two days of continuous action.
Zimbabwe team manager Caroline Nyamande was thrilled by her side’s performance and said they are aiming for a flawless tournament.
With a 100 percent winning run and 12 points in the bag, it appears the local women have been having it easy at home.
One more victory in their last two games today will seal a top place finish and the ticket to represent the continent in the final global qualifiers for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 to be held in West Indies.
“Four wins in four games, I think we started well in this tournament.
“Today (yesterday) we are quite relaxed but the players are geared up for the remaining games.
“We showed what we can, especially the capabilities of the girl child in Zimbabwe.
“We hope to win the remaining games to ensure that we have a perfect tournament,” said Nyamande.
Zimbabwe are hosting the qualifying tournament for the first time.
They finish off their campaign today with a match against Kenya this morning and Uganda in the afternoon.
The have 12 points, six above second-placed Kenya, who have so far managed two wins and two losses. Tanzania and Uganda have one win each and three points apiece.
From the statistics, it looks nothing will stop the Zimbabweans from winning this qualifying tournament.
Zimbabwe barely broke a sweat as they walloped Tanzania by nine wickets in the opening match at Alexandra Sports Club on Saturday morning after they had restricted their opponents to a low score of 36 runs for eight wickets in their 20 overs.
They then made it two wins in a row later in the afternoon after they dispatched Uganda by six wickets.
The hosts cruised to victory after chasing down a target of 72 runs with over seven overs to spare.
They continued with their fine run on Sunday with a 50-run win over Kenya and then completed a double over Tanzania with a repeat nine-wicket victory.
