BOTSWANA President Duma Boko has praised the strong fraternal ties between Botswana and Zimbabwe, highlighting Zimbabwe’s recent gesture of providing crucial Anti-Retroviral (ARV) therapy as a clear example of how dependable a neighbour Zimbabwe is.
President Boko made these remarks during a meeting with Vice-President Dr Constantino Chiwenga on the sidelines of the Sub-Regional World Children’s Day Commemorations held in Gaborone yesterday.
He also commended Zimbabweans residing in Botswana, describing them as excellent guests who significantly contribute to the economic development and the moral fabric of their host country.
“Firstly, I conveyed greetings from His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, who was unable to attend the 2025 Regional World Children’s Day Commemorations in person,” said VP Chiwenga after the closed-door meeting with President Boko.
“He expressed gratitude to Zimbabwe for the generous donation of ARV medications. The absence of these vital medicines can have severe consequences and it is essential that they are accessible.”
President Boko remarked on the positive presence of Zimbabweans in Botswana, noting that they are hard-working individuals and excellent hosts.
While acknowledging some minor challenges, he emphasised that the overall impact of Zimbabweans in Botswana is overwhelmingly positive.
“Zimbabwe is eager to strengthen economic collaboration with Botswana, particularly as both countries seek to diversify their economies amidst difficulties in the diamond sector, which has traditionally been a cornerstone of Botswana’s economy,” said VP Chiwenga.
Last month, Zimbabwe donated and loaned ARV drugs to Botswana to help alleviate shortages.
The aid package included a 20 percent donation and an 80 percent loan, with Botswana agreeing to repay the loaned medications in kind — returning the same drugs at a later date when they are able to do so.
