to celebrate the country’s 33rd Independence Day Anniversary with the main event being held in Harare at the National Sports Stadium.
President Mugabe presided over the celebrations in Harare and presented the keynote address to the more than 60 000 people who thronged the event early morning to secure some seats.
Political parties in the inclusive Government yesterday put aside their political differences and attended the event and reports say the MDC formations were represented in most celebration centres.
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai also attended the event in Harare but sneaked into the stadium using an exit gate instead of the entrance reserved for dignitaries.
He attended together with the MDC-T national chairman Mr Lovemore Moyo and Deputy Prime Ministers Arthur Mutambara and Thokozani Khupe among others.
President Mugabe Mugabe and wife Amai Grace arrived to a thunderous welcome from the crowd.
Also present were local service chiefs and representatives from the African National Congress of South Africa.
The Stadium was filled up by 11 am and some people could not be accommodated and had to follow proceedings from outside.
The people were treated to military displays and sungura artists Alick Macheso and Tryson Chimbetu entertained the people in the afternoon before a soccer march pitting Dynamos and Highlanders.
Manyame High School provided mass displays.
In other nine provincial capitals and districts, provincial Governors and senior civil servants inspected the guards of honour and read President Mugabe’s speech.
