The Zimbabwe chess team has achieved a monumental feat, securing second place in Africa and 56th globally out of 196 participating countries at the recently concluded 44th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary and has qualified for the World Cup.
Zimbabwe secured automatic qualification for the Chess World Cup alongside Egypt, South Africa and Algeria. A record-breaking 186 teams participated in Open Section and 162 in Women’s.
The impressive performance earned Zimbabwe a coveted spot in the upcoming World Cup, cementing the country’s growing reputation as a chess powerhouse.
“We are thrilled with the team’s outstanding performance and qualification for the Chess World Cup, which showcases Zimbabwe’s untapped talent and potential,” said Hon Tongai Mnangagwa, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Services.
“This achievement not only brings pride to our nation but also highlights the importance of investing in sports development programs. Qualifying for the World Cup is a dream come true for Zimbabwean chess. We are eager to take on the world’s best and make our mark.”
Zimbabwe’s success at the Olympiad is a testament to the country’s growing chess culture and dedication to developing young talent.
