ZIMBABWE continues to closely monitor Tropical Cyclone Gezani as the weather phenomenon is forecasted to briefly approach the coast in neighbouring Mozambique after intensifying on its way from Madagascar; although it is not expected to enter the country.
Giving an update on the weather conditions in the country, Meteorological Service Department (MSD) director Mrs Rebecca Manzo said Tropical Cyclone Gezani is currently active in the Southwest Indian Ocean.
“As of yesterday (Thursday) morning, Gezani had weakened to a Severe Tropical Storm but is expected to re-intensify as it moves west-southwest away from Madagascar. The system is projected to brelfy approach the coast of Mozambique before turning southward into the southern Indian Ocean where it is likely to dissipate,” said Mrs Manzou.
She said the effects of Tropical Cyclone Gezani can be widespread.
“Currently the system is drawing moisture away from Zimbabwe, contributing to dry conditions over the western areas. However, as the storm moves further south in the Mozambican channel, a moisture band may from; bringing rainfall to Zimbabwe from February 15 to February 17,” added Mrs Manzou.
She urged the public and farmers to take precautionary measures at all times.
“Do not attempt to flooded rivers or streams and secure loose outdoor structures and items. Drive with caution, especially in areas with poor drainage. Farmers should protect livestock and equipment. Schools, event organisers and transport operators should prepare for possible disruptions,” said the MSD director.
Mrs Manzou said the weather forecaster will continue issuing timely updates.
