IN a recent report released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat), it has been revealed that employment in the country has shown a modest increase of 0,9% points during the third quarter of 2023.
According to the statistics, the national employment-to-population ratio (EPR) experienced a rise of 0,9% points, reaching 34,9% in the 3rd quarter, compared to 34,0% during the same period last year.
This improvement suggests that a slightly larger proportion of the country’s working-age population, aged 15 and above, are now engaged in employment.
While this upward shift brings encouraging news, it also reflects the importance of further efforts to enhance employment rates throughout Zimbabwe. The need for sustained growth in employment is crucial for a thriving economy and a prosperous society.

Commenting on the trend, local economist and National University of Science and Technology lecturer, Mr Stevenson Dlamini highlights the role of increased employment opportunities in driving economic growth and reducing poverty levels.
“The increase in the national employment-to-population ratio by 0,9% points to 34,9% in the 3rd quarter of 2023 is an encouraging development. This implies that a higher proportion of the working-age population, specifically 15 years and older, is employed compared to the same quarter last year. With a total employment figure of 3 121 007, it indicates that a significant number of Zimbabweans are actively engaged in the workforce. This can have positive implications for the overall economic growth and development of the country,” said Mr Dlamini.
Mr Morris Mpala said one significant factor behind the growth in employment rates being marginal is the difficult global environment.
“The environment has stagnated as evidenced by the marginal increases in employment statistics. It’s a reflection of a difficult operating environment with marginal growth opportunities in mining, retail and wholesaling. It’s a reflection that industry and commerce have a timid approach as global slowdown is on the rise,” he said.
It is worth noting that the ZimStat report maintains an impartial perspective, presenting the employment statistics objectively and without bias. Furthermore, it highlights the necessity for sustained efforts to create more job opportunities and improve the livelihoods of Zimbabwean citizens.
By striving towards increased opportunities and fostering a supportive environment for economic growth, Zimbabwe can move closer to achieving its goals of higher employment rates and improved living standards for its citizens.
