War Veterans, collaborators and non-combatants and their families are entitled to statutory benefits from the Government, Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Monica Mavhunga, has revealed.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday in the capital, Minister Mavhunga said that her ministry seeks to cater for the families of those who played a part in the liberation of the country.
“The leaders of our fallen heroes live on through the lives of their children and widows. As such, the Ministry stands ready to serve, protect and uplift the families of Zimbabwe’s heroes,” she said.
“My Ministry is responsible for the administration of the National Heroes Act, Chapter 10:16, and plays a critical role in safeguarding the welfare and dignity of the families left behind by our fallen heroes and heroines, aligning with Vision 2030.”
Minister Mavhunga clarified that the categories currently entitled to statutory benefits are war veterans and ex-political prisoners, detainees, and restrictees.
These groups are entitled to education, medical and economic empowerment initiatives.
“The Ministry has intensified efforts to ensure that no hero’s dependents are left behind,” she said.
To achieve this, Minister Mavhunga said the ministry has rolled out an awareness campaign to ensure all beneficiaries are documented.
“Through registration and awareness programs, the Ministry continues to reach out to communities and empower them with knowledge about the benefits and assistance available to them from the government.
“The Ministry is conducting targeted awareness programs in rural and remote areas, ensuring that eligible dependents are identified, documented and integrated into government support systems.”
