THE National Biotechnology Authority of Zimbabwe will this week hold its maiden Biotechnology Expo to showcase latest advancements in the sector.
This expo will be held from October 22 to 23 at the University of Zimbabwe Innovation Hub under the theme: “Innovating Heritage: Pioneering industrialisation through Biotechnology.”
The expo will bring together representatives from academia, industry,Government and international partners to explore the vast potential of biotechnology in addressing national and global challenges.
“Recognising biotechnology as a key driver of economic growth, food security, health innovation, and environmental sustainability, the expo aims to underscore its importance in advancing Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy,” the authority said in a statement.
Zimbabwe continues to make significant strides in biotechnology research and application, particularly in the fields of agriculture, health, and industrial processes.
It remains at the forefront of promoting biotechnology education, research, and innovation across industry and various institutions of higher learning.
Through promoting awareness, building capacity, and fostering innovation, the authority ensures that students, educators, and researchers are well-equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to harness biotechnology for the benefit of national development.
Zimbabwe has embraced biotechnology as it aligns with Education 5.0, which seeks to develop home-grown solutions and industrial growth.
To meet the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Zimbabwe and the SADC region, the country has pledged to promote emerging technologies in a number of fields, including robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, quantum computing, big data, biotechnology, fifth-generation wireless technology and 3D.
In its Second Science, Technology and Innovation Policy released in March 2012, the country identified biotechnology as one of the most promising tools that can help increase food productivity, enhance the health and wellness of society and boost manufacturing output.
