HARARE, Zimbabwe – On the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, President Emmerson Mnangagwa today launches the Zimbabwe Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan 2024-2030 at State House.
The comprehensive strategic plan aims to catalyse a multi-faceted approach to effectively address the growing challenges of drug and substance abuse in the country.
It will target the threats posed by this crisis to national security, public health, social stability, and economic development, as well as its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
The plan is important as it has been noted that young people are particularly vulnerable to drug use.
Data shows that in 2021, 5.3 percent of 15-16-year-old adolescents worldwide had used cannabis in the past year.
Early drug use can have long-term negative effects, as the adolescent brain is still developing.
The launch event is being attended by key stakeholders from Government ministries, law enforcement, health services, and civil society. The plan includes enhanced law enforcement, expanded treatment and rehabilitation services, and public education campaigns to tackle this issue on multiple fronts.
The Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan will be a pivotal step in Zimbabwe’s efforts to commemorate World Drug Day and achieve a society free from the scourge of drug abuse.
