ZIMBABWE Under-14 and Under-16 teams scooped medals in the ITF/CAT Southern African Junior Team tennis Championships that were held in Namibia from 15 to 19 January.
Zim’s Under-14 teams got a silver medal after a 2-0 defeat from the crowned champions South Africa while the under 16 got a bronze medal in both categories.
Eight countries featured in the tournament including Zimbabwe, South Africa, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana, Mauritius, Mozambique and Angola.
Zimbabwe tennis coach Miracle Matanga said: “The championships were good for the players as they got to play with the best players from the southern region in their respective age groups.
“There are a lot of things that the kids need to continue learning in terms of the game: professionalism, routines, preparation towards the games and the importance of the technical aspects of the game too,” said Matanga.
Matanga said the games were a good platform for selection for the African Junior Championships (AJC) to be played later this year which also gives the players room to showcase what they have at a higher level.
One of the Under-14 girls, Tanyaradzwa Midzi was crowned the Under-14 Southern Africa Tennis Champion.
