BULAWAYO Metropolitan province will be sending two teams for the rugby sevens’ final national trials at the Belgravia Sports Club in Harare on 25 January.

About 10 teams from the country’s provinces and tertiary institutions are expected to feature on the day.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board fixtures secretary Simba Mandla Dangah said they were on track and they were hoping to have several of Bulawayo’s breed of players making it into the final squad of the sevens.

“We are gearing up for the Final National Trials to be conducted on Saturday. Harare and Bulawayo have produced two teams for the trial while Midlands, Mutare, Marondera and the Tertiary institutions (the teachers, polytechnic colleges and varsities) have fashioned one each.

“Select squads will be selected in the process and by end of the day a training squad for the Cheetahs will be named,” said Dangah.

Zimbabwe Zambezi Cheetahs sevens rugby held a pre-selection tournament earlier this month at Hartsfield ground where they drew 45 players from the session.

Last year, the Cheetahs failed to defend their Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens title, finishing third at the tournament. However, Dangah said they had an opportunity to take part in the World Rugby Sevens challenger series to try and secure their ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
